Our Story
How It Began
The firm was born when founder Vanessa AvRuskin recognized how powerful it would be to combine the proven effectiveness of executive coaching with her expertise in communications consulting.
At the time, Vanessa had spent over fifteen years working for a boutique firm providing communications training and consulting. Working in virtually every industry, Vanessa helped clients at every level in their careers use a standardized approach to craft clear, audience-centred messages and deliver them with an engaging presence. After working with hundreds of clients, Vanessa realized something critical was missing.
It became clear that although the methodology was effective, it was also prescriptive. Clients would make temporary changes, but they struggled to make them stick. Vanessa recognized that many of her clients were not “poor communicators” but that they were navigating inhibiting thoughts, beliefs that no longer served them and patterns of behaviour that impacted how they communicated.
The Idea
The idea for Radiate fully crystallized when Vanessa met with a senior executive who seemingly knew everything about the technical aspects of communication. He knew all the “rules,” had read and watched everything he could about communication and understood all the theories behind effective communication. And yet, faced with challenging presentations to his Board, he struggled to share his ideas in a compelling way. His audiences found him abrasive and aggressive, and his language was overly complex.
Vanessa worked with him to explore what lay beneath his failure to communicate effectively. She let go of the standard approach and started to focus on her client first. She asked questions about his vision, his relationship with the Board, how his beliefs and attitude impacted that relationship, why he did the work he did, and what he believed was the true purpose behind his interactions with the Board.
The more Vanessa took this new direction, the more the client understood himself, his motivations, and how his attitude and perspective affected his communication. He began to see himself more fully and saw the Board as his ally rather than his adversary. The result was that his attitude was transformed – and his effectiveness dramatically increased.
The Result
Working with this one client solidified Vanessa’s approach. Vanessa recognized that clients would make more meaningful progress and lasting change if they could first approach their communications with greater self-awareness and then integrate a tactical approach.
She trained in Co-Active Coaching, and after years of honing her technique, she became a Co-Active Professional Certified Coach (CPCC), an ICF-accredited PCC (International Coaching Federation, Professional Certified Coach) and trained in relationship coaching with Organization Relationship Systems Coach (ORSC).
Radiate Communications continues to grow rapidly, serving businesses including technology, financial services, professional services, pharmaceuticals, grocery retail, law, insurance, and public sector organizations.
